How fit do I need to be?

To enjoy the backcountry skiing tour at the Haberl Hut, you need to have at least a moderate fitness level. The Haberl Hut adventure offers intermediate and advanced difficulties, which means that some previous experience is required. If you’re intermediate, your expert guide will help you improve your skills and coach you when things get a bit more difficult. Don’t worry if you’re on an advanced level, you’ll still have lots of objectives to tackle!

What if I’ve never backcountry skied before?

To participate in this Haberl Hut skiing tour, you need to have at least some previous backcountry skiing experience. The levels for which this trip is tailored are intermediate and advanced. Your guides will take care of the planning, oversee your technique and teach you how to manage the terrain. Whether on an intermediate or an advanced level, you can be excited about some new challenges and polishing up your technique. If you’ve never backcountry skied before, we suggest going backcountry skiing in Whistler.

What equipment do I need to bring?

For technical backcountry ski and safety equipment, you will need to bring: Touring skis or splitboard with skins Touring boots and poles Helmet Ski and boot crampons Avalanche safety equipment (can be rented): Digital, 3-antenna avalanche transceiver or beacon Lightweight snow shovel and avalanche probe Glacier harness with two locking carabiners Mountaineering axe For the Haberl Hut, you will need to bring: Comfortable clothing for lounging around the hut Slippers Sleeping bag (about 0 to -5 degree range) Small pillow Battery pack Headlamp Toiletries For personal items, we recommend bringing: 20-30L ski pack 50L duffel Sunglasses and ski goggles Sun and lip cream Face mask Wind and waterproof shell jacket with hood (Gore-Tex recommended) Ski pants (Gore-Tex recommended) Down jacket or vest Synthetic or wool base layers, underwear and socks Mid-insulation fleece of puffy jacket Warm outer puffy jacket Toque (wool or synthetic) Brimmed cap Face warmer (scarf, neck tube, face mask, buff, etc.) Light gloves and insulated gloves or mitts One triple-action locking carabiner or two conventional locking carabiners Repair kit and Leatherman for your equipment (can be shared between several people) Water bottle and 1L of water Thermos with a warm beverage — optional Lunch for every day Food you can eat on-the-go First aid kit Camera — optional Keep in mind that no extra skis or baggage will be allowed over and above the ski level pack and 50L duffel.

Can I rent equipment?

All mandatory gear can be rented if you don’t have your own. You can rent an avalanche safety pack (transceiver, probe, and shovel) with your guide for $30 a day or $100 a week. Other mandatory gear, such as skis, poles, boots, or skins are available to rent from the following companies: Vanilla Pure Squamish and Escape Route . Your guides can pick up the rental ski equipment if needed by clients, but please let us know at least a week in advance.

Group sizes and age requirements

Group sizes and pricing: For this adventure, the max client-to-guide ratio is 4:1. All prices are per person. Cost is per person and it doesn’t decrease as the group grows. Ski touring at the Haberl Hut can be arranged for larger groups. Contact us to make arrangements. Min. age requirements: If you are older than 18, you’re good to go. Minors may be permitted to join tours on a case-by-case basis. If your group has skiers under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

Getting there and meeting location

To get to Squamish Airport, which is the starting point of your adventure, most people fly into Vancouver International Airport. From there, it’s a one-hour drive if you rent a car or a two-hour drive if you take a shuttle service. Once you meet your guide at the Squamish Airport, they will choose the appropriate terrain dependent on conditions and the ability of the group.

early bird Is there anything better than waking up to fresh snow waiting for you to ski on? As you reach the Haberl Hut with a heli ride, get ready for the exciting four days ahead of you where you’ll explore the Tantalus Range.

Have breakfast with a view as your guide suggests premier off-piste locations—you’ll ski untouched snow of Mt Dione, Serratus, or Alpha. Let your ACMG certified guide assist you in practicing your moves on whichever surface you’d like to try out: gentle slopes, glacier runs, steep terrain, and more! When you’re done with skiing for the day, go back to your homey Haberl Hut to relax and re-energize for tomorrow’s ski touring.

Day 1: Arrival

Meet your guide and your fellow skiers at the Squamish Airport at 7:30 am. From there you’ll fly into your base for the next couple of days: the Jim Haberl Hut, a hardy hut perched high in the mountains in the heart of the Tantalus Range. Positioned at 6,660 ft (2,030 m) elevation, the Haberl Hut is a comfortable base offering unparalleled skiing opportunities. When you get settled in, you’ll go through companion rescue and emergency procedures. Have your lunch and make sure you’re all ready for stepping onto powder—start your backcountry skiing adventure!

Days 2 and 3: Exploring the Tantalus Range

If breakfast with a view is your thing, the Haberl Hut will knock you off your feet—have a look out the window at the dramatic Tantalus landscape as you sip your morning coffee. Over the course of the next three days, you’ll head out at 8:30 am and explore premier ski touring and mountaineering objectives in the area. These include Mt Dione, Serratus, and Alpha, all of which are visible from the Tantalus lookout on the Sea-to-Sky highway. Surrounded by granite peaks, you’ll be able to do some serious sharpening of your skills thanks to the wide variety of mixed snow and terrain. From gentle glacier runs to steep couloirs and fluted faces, there’s something for everyone. Depending on your goals and expectations, your guide will perfectly tailor this backcountry skiing experience to your liking. After a day of backcountry skiing, get back to your comfortable hut in the afternoon, where you’ll end your days with après-ski dinners and mingling with your new friends.

Day 4: Departure

Soak in the views on your last morning at the hut. At 8:30 am, head out the door for a few more laps. After skiing for several days out the Haberl Hut tagging some local peaks with the Howe Sound at your feet, you can end the trip at the Tantalus Hut and have a heli bump you back up to collect your gear. Take one last look at the mighty Tantalus Range which you traversed the past few days as the helicopter takes you back to Squamish Airport.
