How fit do I need to be?

If you can climb a ladder, you’re good to go. Being in good shape is always a plus but far from necessary. Rock climbing is all about using good movement technique rather than muscling up a cliff using brute strength. To ensure you have a fun day, your guide will choose routes that best suit your skill and fitness level.

What if I’ve never climbed before?

Wintergreen has plenty of options for beginner climbers. Whether you’ve never climbed before or are transitioning from the gym to outdoor climbing, your guide will customize the day to suit your skill level and objectives. With a guide by your side, you’ll learn something new, stay safe on the rocks, and most importantly, have fun! For intermediate to advanced climbers, Wintergreen has loads of routes to spend the day on. Your guide will discuss your objectives and customize the day to your goals. Let your guide plan the day so you can focus on developing your skills while climbing the classic routes or best hidden gems the area has to offer.

What about required equipment?

All technical climbing equipment will be provided by your guiding service. However, if you have your own gear, feel free to bring it. You’ll need: Helmet Harness with a locking carabiner, belay device, and chalk bag Ropes Rock shoes (included in the price, but we recommend bringing your own if you have them) Climbing hardware (quickdraws, cam devices, stoppers, etc.) Here’s a list of the equipment we suggest you bring: Day pack large enough to carry all the items listed (around a 40L bag) Water bottle Food you can eat on-the-go Toiletries (sunscreen, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.) Sunglasses Camera — optional Dress comfortably and for the weather in clothes you can move in. We suggest bringing clothing appropriate for the season. Layers are best and don’t wear jeans.

Group sizes and age requirements

Group sizes and prices: Group sizes are usually between 1–4 people with one guide, but you can also go with a larger group of up to 6 people per guide. Cost per person will decrease as the group grows for private tours, so it’s the perfect opportunity to climb with friends and family. Climbing days can be arranged for bigger groups. Contact us prior to booking. Min. age requirements: If you are older than 18, you’re good to go. Teens aged 14-17 can go on their own, but a guardian will need to provide a signed waiver before an outing with the guide. Kids younger than 14 can go climbing on a case-by-case basis, but must be in the presence of a parent or legal guardian. If your group has climbers under the age of 18, contact us prior to booking to make arrangements.

Getting there and meeting location

Wintergreen may be a small town, but is lucky enough to be close to several airports. The nearest domestic airport is Charlottesville Albemarle Airport, only 39 miles from the center of Wintergreen. To get to Wintergreen, just drive for 45 minutes via I-64 W and VA-151 S. For international flights, try to opt for Richmond International Airport. Being only 110 miles away, it is the closest one to your desired location. If you only follow I-64 W, you will be in Wintergreen in less than 2 hours. Once you and your guide agree on the details of your itinerary, your guide will suggest the best place to meet — either at the climbing area’s parking lots or nearby markets/coffee shops. From there, you’ll head to the crag and begin your day of climbing!

Wintergreen cliffs range from 30 to 120 feet tall with a variety of climbing styles. Beginners will appreciate Wintergreen’s low-angle slabs close to resort amenities. Looking for a challenge? Tackle steep vertical and overhung walls suited for advanced climbers looking to push their abilities. Let your guide know what you want to accomplish and they’ll create the perfect day on Wintergreen’s prime rock.

Get a taste of what Wintergreen has to offer with a half-day customized to you. With objectives for the heartiest of climbers, your guide will introduce you to one of the area’s incredible routes. New to climbing? Take in phenomenal mountain views while learning the fundamentals like proper gear placement, anchors, knots, climbing techniques and rappelling.

Take your climbing from the gym to the crag with this two-day course designed to get you comfortable climbing outdoors. You will learn the basics of outdoor climbing, and develop your technical skills and climbing movement in an outdoor setting. Suitable for any indoor or outdoor climbing experience, this private course will see you accomplish your climbing goals faster under the instruction of a climbing guide.

Prerequisites:

Experience climbing indoors or out

For anyone who leads or follows sport or trad routes, learn what it takes to get you and your climbing partners out of a sticky situation. This private course follows the American Mountain Guides Association’s Rock Guide Training Program and will allow you to develop technical safety and self-rescue skills to leave with the peace of mind knowing that you’re prepared for anything that might happen on the rock.

1 year outdoor climbing experience
Experience as second or lead on trad climbs
Experience climbing in multi-pitch terrain

Highlight of our trip! If you’re interested in an amazing adventure out in the mountains this is it. We had So much fun on our half day rock climbing tour. It was just the 2 of us with our guide who was super professional and encouraging. I felt really safe the whole time and we were able to try several different rock faces. We booked last minute and they were able to accommodate. Highly recommend!

OMG!!! Never believed this would be such FUN...bringing the family next time.

First let me state, I am no spring chicken! But, that didn’t stop Sally from treating me to a FABULOUS day climbing in Wintergreen, Virginia. It was a safe and positive experience for me and I am afraid of heights! I am already looking forward to celebrating my 50th birthday in June on a private climb with the rest of my family. If you have never climbed before and are looking for a patient, kind person – ask for Sally!

Fully refundable within the initial 48 hours from booking, unless the trip date is less than 7 days from the time of the booking.
Cancellations up to 7 days prior to the trip date are refundable 100%.
Cancellations within 7 days prior to the trip date are non-refundable.
